Graf von Kanitz is a premium organic vineyard in the Rheingau. The vineyard exists since the 13th century. The mission of the vineyard is to produce unique, outstanding Riesling wines. 95% of the vineyards fulfil the strict criteria for “Großes Gewächs”, which is comparable with a Grand Cru wine in France. However, Kanitz only declares wines from an outstanding vintage and from the best vineyards as “Großes Gewächs”. Graf von Kanitz is a member of VDP, an association of many of the best German vineries.
Graf von Kanitz wines have been produced organic since 1968: no chemical and synthetic fertilizers and pesticides are used. Ensuring biological diversity and taking care that all vines are healthy is a top priority for the vineyard’s team.
The vines of Graf von Kanitz grow around the town of Lorch, on vineyards which have been in use since 1085. Slate and quartzite soils and south facing hills directly at the Rhine ensure that every grape receives plenty of sun and heat, resulting in unique Rheingau Rieslings. The Kanitz vines are powerful, have complex aromas and distinct mineral flavours.
The vinery is especially known for its outstanding Rieslings. Dry “Große Gewächse” are regularly produced on the Lorcher Krone, Lorcher Kapellenberg and Lorcher Pfaffenwies vineyards. However, also the „normal“ Rieslings are of a very high standard. All of them offer a very good value for money. Graf von Kanitz also produces excellent late harvest wines. In addition, very good Pinot Noir and fruity and spicy Gewürztraminer wines are created in the vinery.
